To flirt means to show a person that you are attracted to them when you are speaking to them. This can be tricky in any language, and even more so if you want to use phrases to flirt in English like a native speaker.
For example, if you spot that special someone at the other side of the room, what can you say to them to strike up a casual conversation?
Today we’re going to give you some tips so that you can sound more confident and natural next time you want to tell someone that you’re into them!
Phrases to flirt in English
Get together sometime
To get together or a get-together also means a casual meeting with friends. Here you can say ‘We should get together sometime’ or ‘Let’s get together sometime’ to ask someone out on a date without sounding too direct.
Are you seeing anyone?
A good one if you know the person already or haven’t seen them for a long time. It can sound friendly and casual, but it can also let them know that you’re interested
How are you still single?
Although a friend could also ask you this question, ‘How are you still single’ can be very flirtatious if said with a tone that suggests you are attracted to someone.
Has anyone ever told you—?
If you want to flirt and give out compliments, this is a good one to use. You can complete the question with anything you like without sounding too aggressive
I love your —
Careful what you add here at the end! Our advice is to keep it sweet and innocent and mention, for example, their hair, smile, dress, or jacket.
You have a lovely —
Again, choose your words carefully so you don’t come across as a complete weirdo**.**
Can I have/get your number?
A pretty direct approach. If they say no, you could suggest connecting on social media. And if it’s still no, they’re probably not interested.
Can I buy you a drink?
Here could be a great opportunity to attract someone’s attention. If the answer is yes, it might not necessarily mean they’re interested. After all, everyone likes a free drink!
.
We should hang out sometime
You can also hang out with friends, but in a romantic context this suggestion would indicate that you’re asking someone out on a date.
Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?
This is an old favourite and might still work if it sounds funny and makes the other person laugh.
Some more humorous chat-up lines to flirt in English:

Rejections
Obviously, the idea with these phrases to flirt in English is to take the relationship one step further and go out on a date. However, be prepared for these negative responses in case the other person isn’t interested:
- I’m not interested: The message should be pretty clear here.
- In your dreams: This phrase sounds quite nice but actually means that it’s never going to happen in real life!
- Get lost: This phrase can be taken to mean that the other person doesn’t ever want to see you again.
- I’m seeing someone: You may never know if this is really the case, but it’s quite clear that there’s not going to be a date anytime soon.
